“FOCUS? You’re joking of course!”
FOCUS? As in paying attention to one thing? As in working on one thing until I get “it” done? You’re joking, of course.
Who can stay focused these days?
With to-do lists that are longer than Niagara Falls, or the 1,000’s of emails sitting in your inbox, phones ringing or buzzing with messages, people coming into chat, poor sleep and then there’s the resulting stress that comes with all of the above. Or maybe the stress is causing lack of sleep.
I remember the years when I was so stressed that my head felt like it was filled with cotton. After decades of being psychologically and verbally bashed by my abusive husband, I would just go through the actions of the day like a zombie, spaced out, too stressed to think clearly, or to make even a simple decision such as what to make for dinner.
A crushed confidence. Focusing was an illusion.
Do you ever feel that way with your business? That getting and staying focused is just an illusion? That it’s only for someone else and not me?
I get that.
Yet, you need to get some stuff done.
What can you do? I’ll share a few ideas here as the list is long, and the inability to get and stay focused can be complicated.
When you have those days where it’s especially hard to focus, stop to reflect if something in particular happened to cause the lack of focus.
Are you not feeling well? Did you have a spat with a significant other? Are you lacking sleep? Are you unclear about the correct priorities for your business?
Look, you’re not focusing anyway. So just stop to reflect what might be the cause.
If you’re under the weather, give yourself some self-compassion, and take care of yourself. If your head is stuffed from a cold, you can’t focus. Just accept it. Take the time to care for yourself instead of fighting to be focused and productive. Then you’ll heal faster.
If you are unclear about your priorities. Write them all down. Read them out loud. Ask yourself, based on my goals, what is the ONE step I can do? Be confident in your decision. And do it.
But what if you’re just having one of those “off days.” You can’t focus on your business, no matter what.
Then once again, give yourself some self-compassion where you’re at. Listen to yourself and maybe the best thing to focus on is not writing, reading, or replying to emails or phone calls, but it’s to sit still, meditate, take a walk or exercise. Maybe your body is speaking to you in ways you weren’t expecting.
Remember: Productivity is not about “doing.” It’s about doing the right thing, at the right moment in the right way.
So, the most productive thing you could do to increase your focus is to release your anxiety, and move from your work and obligations to something that will rejuvenate you. Once you’re refreshed and rejuvenated, then you’ll be able to have a sharper focus. You’ll be more motivated and excited. You’ll get more done with enthusiasm.
