“Dancing to Your Goals.”
I love to dance. I love to sway and move my body to the music. Dancing to the sounds of rock and roll, Ballroom or Latin. I’m there.
I “kind of” do all the dances. If I have a good lead, I can fake a decent follow.
My goal now, however, is to become a very good dancer.
Dancing energizes me, and makes me feel even more exhilarated about life.
However, just because I have identified a specific goal I want to achieve, and I’m enthused about it doesn’t mean I’ll attain it.
Will you support me? Go to my Facebook page to cheer me on AND to join me in the Achieve Your Goal Challenge.
I want to explore one small piece with you why and how I could I fail to achieve my goal, and which may help you understand why you may not achieving your goals.
Enthusiasm doesn’t mean you’ll do it. Have you noticed that over time how often your enthusiasm wanes?
In the beginning, you think, “I’m so excited. This is awesome. Nothing will stop me!” But then you start to hit some obstacles. You realize reaching that goal was not as easy as you thought, or as easy as you wanted it to be. (Check my other blog on Easy vs Simple)
So then you start to make excuses. Excuses why you can’t reach that goal, excuses that it’s too hard, excuses that you don’t have the time, excuses that it wasn’t really a goal you wanted anyway. Those excuses pop in many shapes and forms, so watch out!
Then your excuses become self-fulfilling prophecies and you drop the goal you once were so enthusiastic about not too long before.
The problem: this happens too often in your life. You end up unhappy, defeated, deflated or disappointed with yourself—again.
Then THOSE feelings further perpetuate why you can’t achieve other goals.
This is NOT where you want to be or keep ending up.
So what can you do to overcome giving up on your goal and stopping the negative spiral of bashing yourself? There are many roads to achievement. I’ll address only one here for brevity:
You need to not let your excuses and fear, which is the basis for your excuses, to be the deciding factors for you what you really want to achieve.
Letting fear drive you is an easy out. Yes, an easy out.
Look, most of us fear something we’ve never done before, simply because we’re pushing ourselves into areas that are new.
If you let something new and challenging—which ought to be exciting—push you into fear each time, you’ll never succeed.
- Don’t wait to be courageous to take action. Action cures fear. Think of yourself jumping into a pool the first time with your nose held closed. You jump. Scared. Not sure you’ll come up. And then, look at that: you bobbed up. Wow, you survived!
- Spend time visualizing and seeing yourself as already having achieved your goal. Do this visualization daily, not just one time, otherwise, you’re back at making excuses. If you want this goal—you MUST make changes.
For example, with eyes closed, I need to see myself being a great dancer now–dancing gracefully across the floor doing the foxtrot, or salsa with fast sharp. I need to clearly envision the outfits I’d be wearing-the color, the length, the texture of the material. I need to envision the jewelry I’d be wearing. I need to emotionalize the feeling I’d have while dancing.
I need to feel and see my way to being a great dancer….
And that’s what you need to do, too—to show commitment to your goal.
- Get specific training.
Visualization without improving your skills won’t make things happen either.
- Have group support. Doing it alone is a quick way to quit.
- Identify a goal you want to achieve.
- Post it on my Facebook page.
- Identify where, or which skills you need to improve.
- Realize you’ll most likely need a professional to guide and teach you, and hold you accountable along your path. Doing it alone, will impede your ability to achieve your goal.
- Will you join me in the challenge? Select one audacious goal and post it on my Facebook page.
I’m here to cheer you on! You can do it!!
